The school follows the broad curricula requirements as laid down by the Gauteng Department of Education.
There are eight Learning
Areas with a cross-curricula emphasis.The areas are:
1) Languages, Literacy and Communication
2) Human and Social Sciences
3) Mathematical Literacy, Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences
4)
Technology
5) Natural Sciences
6) Arts and Culture
7) Economic and Management Sciences
8) Life Orientation
THE LEARNING PHASES ARE
Foundation Phase (Grades One to Three)
In the Foundation Phase, the main focus is on numeracy, literacy and life skills. Included in
this programme are art, computer skills, music, physical education, as well as design and technology.
Intermediate (Grades Four to
Six) and Senior (Grade Seven) Phases
The curriculum encompasses the eight Learning areas. In Grade Seven these additional subjects
are taught: Entrepreneurship and Thinking Skills.
Sex Education is taught from Grade Four upwards. The material is dealt with at levels
appropriate to both age and maturity. Parents are welcome to attend separate discussion sessions with the professional staff. Aspects
of the curricula are outlined to parents at these sessions.
Computer lessons are held weekly for all classes in the Computer Centre.
Every child is taught to be computer literate.
All classes have Circle Time, usually with the class or homeroom educator. The sessions
are aimed at nurturing interpersonal relationships and friendships within the class. Circle Time is also used to help the children
become aware of the values and attitudes that are necessary for a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Emotional intelligence is also thereby
fostered.
In Grades One and Two, the homework given is mainly oral work. In Grade Three, the homework also includes some written work. The amount
of time which should be allocated to daily homework is as indicated below:
Grades Four and Five
Grade Six
Grade Seven
Three-quarters of an hour
One and a quarter hours
One and a half hours
The scholastic assessment of the child is done on a continuous basis throughout the year.
From Grade Four upwards, there is a system
of cycle tests. Examinations are written in June and November by the Grades Six and Seven children.
All Grades receive reports every Term.
"Let's look at my work" nights are held in Terms One and Two. At "Let's look at my work" nights, the children and parents meet with the educators. Progress being made with school work is discussed.
